Wine Question

Wine Related Question Wine description by "experts"

I often read a description of wine as "sexy" as used by Parker, Wine Spectator & others. I asked Serina Sutcliff at a Hollywood Wine Seminar what they meant. She answered laughingly "I don`t know. I never use the term. Call me if you find out." What do you think they mean by a "sexy" wine? Donald Holzberg

Answer by: Roger C. Bohmrich, MW

That's a great question. I can't pretend there is a definition that has any sort of objectivity, even in the less than precise world of wine tasting vocabulary. Serena Sutcliffe, one of the most gifted and eloquent wine presenters, would not need to resort to such terminology!

To try to explain what I think people mean, I would say, first, that it is certainly used in a very positive sense. A sexy wine is surely a very appealing one, at least to the person using the term. Some probably utilize the word to signify wines with ripe, flashy fruit and supple, rich mouthfeel - but I wouldn't want to go further with a definition.
